Bowery

This is an important wholesale district for Chinese-run restaurants and other businesses all along the Eastern Seaboard and beyond. Poke your head into a print shop, for example, and you may see a batch of menus being printed for a Chinese restaurant in Georgia, or Florida. The many now-Chinese-owned lighting and restaurant-supply businesses hearken to the 1920s, which is when the area first became a lighting and restaurant-supply district. And fun fact: Bowery is also New York’s oldest street — its name comes from “bouwerij,” an antiquated Dutch word for “farm.”
