East Broadway

This busy drag in the eastern part of Chinatown functions as a “Main Street” for Fujianese in Chinatown; the grocery stores and many offices, agencies, and services here are oriented towards locals. Here, you’ll hear a great deal of Fuzhou dialect, the language spoken in the capital city of China’s Fujian Province. On Mondays in particular, the street is busy due to the many Fujianese restaurant workers who come in on their day off from across New York, and across the East Coast in general, to shop, eat, visit lawyers and doctors and employment brokers, and be reminded of home. Shops usually close up by 7pm as many of the employees head back to Flushing, Elmhurst, or Sunset Park.
